Took 50 minutes to first look out and 2hrs30 including a lunch break at the hut and several photo stops to get to the ridge top. Continue walking along the ridge until you get to the cairn, amazing views all around.
We did the hike just to the view point and it was great! Got told not to bother going to the hut. Left the van their in the middle of the day for 3hrs - it's in view of a busy road and lots of people turning up. We felt the park was safe enough
Awesome hike! Lots of fun. Took us 5 hours return. Lots of good views and photo ops. We had good weather but it had rained a lot the day before so the ground was still quite muddy and sludgey.
Did the hike all the way to the top today and it was amazing! I started fairly late (11am) and was down at 6pm. I know, quite long but I stopped couple of times to enjoy the view. Blue sky and no wind but still from the hut to the summit it was covered in snow, got to be careful where to step. Also in the forest many muddy and wet sections, I came back with completely soaked feet but worth it! Beautiful view, do it
We did the hike in April, no sign of broken glass in the parking area, no snow on the top either, so felt completely safe! I totally agree with what was said before - there are 2 options: 1) finish after 1h/1h15min, short walk, nice views, worth if you don’t have much time or are not much of a hiker. OR 2) all the way to the top! That was 2h30min to hut and extra 45min to the top, amazing views & MUCH nicer than just doing the 1h15min (REALLY worth it!!!) However NO POINT at all going just to the hut. You go through a bush & there’s no view from the hut. So either pick option 1 or 2, but not worth going just to the hut (unless you want to sleep there;)).
We started the treck at 7am return at 1pm. No pbm with the vehicle and no trace of infraction on the parking. The hike deserves that we go to the top to take full eyes. 360 degree view just crazy
We decided to give this walk a miss, not because of the walk itself, sounded amazing! But because there is so much smashed glass in the car park as remnants of vehicle break ins. The lady at the information centre says the situation is improved but they still get some thefts. No something that I normally worry about too much in NZ but definitely worth consideration if parking just off this main road.
Wonderful walk. 600m up. Took us 5.30h return with 2 younger kids (and excluding lunch break). Definitely recommend this day walk!!
Count around 2h30 to go back and enjoy the view at the top. I did not go to the hut. The sight was enough for herself! It is definitely worth the detour! The way is quite trying, necessarily it goes up! But most of the time you are sheltered from the sun and the moss forest is charming!
Very good hike, easy for a mountain hike! You can stop after 1h15 when you get an amazing view (it makes around 2h return), or go to the top where you get an even better view (it makes 5h return).
