Trekked to the base of the falls today (within 15m) and it was a highlight of our NZ trip. The sheer volume and power of the water was unbelievable. The route up is rocky and unstable for the first two thirds, the last third requires some careful navigation over heavy water flow and large boulders. The last 50m climb is tricky with basic climbing skills and confidence required. The biggest dangers here are falling into fast water and dislodging scree banks. If you know the dangers, it’s a must!
Absolutely epic waterfall !! We followed the directions from the comment below which were good to start with... However WARNING this is no easy climb. Rock slides have destroyed the previous routes meaning multiple water crossings were neccesary. This track took us 1hour 30 each way and is potentially dangerous for inexperienced hikers/climbers. Be wary of rockfalls and take your time climbing over wet/unstable rocks. Beautiful view at the top if you make it with lots spray from the ice cold waterfall. Unforgettable experience!
Drive 50m further up the road and turn left down the gravel road. Park here. Walk towards the dry stream you'll see there used to be a bridge here walk across the gravel dry stream then there's a slight track in the bushy bit. Keep heading towards the valley once in the valley stick to the right side (facing towards the waterfall). Keep heading up to the waterfall. I managed to do this in flip-flops so any footwear would work. There's 4 dead deer as of Dec 2020 closer to the waterfall. (warning if you don't do well with dead aninals) @the. Wandering. Viking
It's cool to know you've seen something that not a lot of people see. However, the walk up there is super rocky. As you get closer to the mouth it gets pretty dodgy and some rocks are slippery. I'd say it's not worth any potential injuries.
It's true that the fall looks really beautiful but when we tried to get there, there were hunters who told us that if we keep going it would be unsafe... We went to the visitor center to let them know about it and they told us that some hunters are allowed! It doesn't make sense so if you go, take care mates
Way better then the wall to Ball Hut! Pictures can't do it justice, but even the way up was fun! Definitely worth it fot the cold shower!
Currently (21.01.18) is a dead deer right in front of the waterfall, if you want to continue to the waterfall you have to pass him. Very disgusting! The waterfall itself is cool.
Y'all need to put a pep in your step. Took me 30 minutes to get right up into the belly of that thing and another 20 down. Worth the stop.
ONE OF MY HIGHLIGHTS OF MY NZ TRIP DEFWORTH IT U DONT GETTO SEE THE BEST PART UNTIL 10m from the base of the waterfall truly rewarding
Took us 1h20 round trip including several minutes of admiring the view from the top. Definitely worth the stop !
