A big walk but on a nice sunny day it is so worth it. The colour of blue is insane. I sat on the mini hill over looking it with a snack and was beautiful
5h round trip with a good lunch break Very nice hike, really very affordable except for the section between the upper and the lower which is a bit challenging but nothing insurmountable. If the weather is clear, the view of the two volcanoes is magnificent.
6 hours of hiking to see a waterfall, a lake and mountains in the distance ... I saw much more beautiful in the Pyrenees!
Did the tracking yesterday and loved it! Highly Recommended! We had great weather and a great view. The track is easy to Lower Tama Lake. The last stretch to Upper Tama Lake is exhausting. BUT the effort is definitely worth it ?
Amazinnnng! One of our favorite walk in NZ! I dont get the previous very long bad comment. Of course go on nice day, like a lot of walk! Took us less than 5h return, very flat (exept for the upper but its only 20 minutes) and it worth it! Stunning view of the 2 lakes! We have been on a sunny day and with the snow it was just wonderful. Dont hesitate and enjoy!
I‘m not sure about this one. If the weather allows it, you‘re probably better off taking the Tongariro Crossing. If it‘s too bad for that, then it‘s probably also too bad for this one. This walk is no joke (winter time). While the path itself is easy, the weather changes quickly and dramatically. Within 2 hours we‘ve experienced rain, sunshine, fog, snow and hail. 2.5 hours into it we had to go back because of that. We didn‘t meet a single person on this walk and while I‘d imagine the view to be great in good weather conditions, you could as well go for the Tongariro, which isn‘t much longer. This is not a bad weather walk and you do need to be prepared for it! You‘ve got a few small creek crossings over rocks, so go with good walking shoes. I don‘t know what the Tama Lakes look like because I didn‘t get to see them but the walk itself wasn‘t very exciting. It‘s nice at first but gets somewhat boring after a while. There are other, shorter walks that I‘d rather do. And if the weather allows it, I‘d do the „real deal“ instead of the slightly smaller one that doesn‘t seem to be much easier..
Best walk ever!!! A really nice interesting walk. Go all the way to the upper lake!! You will not be sorry. Make sure you go on a clear day. Took us 4.5hours for a round trip to upper lake
Beautiful walk. Mostly flat until lower lake. Steeper for upper lake, add 40mins to go but so much worth it. Don't go when it rains as it's gravel and can get really slippery. Just careful on the way down anyway. Took us 4h50 return to go till upper tama lake. Really great walk. Recommend.
Overall was fairly flat going to Lower Tama so not as high a level of fitness required, but is still a longer walk, and does get very steep going to Upper Tama. Be careful on days with bad weather as I had to turn back 3/4 of the way between Upper and Lower Tama due to very high winds and sideways rain. Good way to see the land and experience the uniqueness of the area.
Great hike. For people with average fitness. The ascent to Upper Lake is a bit steeper, more demanding and slippery. Definitely a good alternative to tongariro Crossing!
