Only 1.5km of gravel road. Mobile, but not very spectacular and few places to stop. With a 7m motorhome approx. 6 hours travel time.

Nice rosd suitable for all type of cars, just sometimes narrow corners. There is still about 10km of gravel road. When we were there it was nice, no big pot holes. We didn’t meet any car in our direction (to Stratford). About 10x uphill but not a huge hill. Nice road with nice views!

Came thru with caravan from Taumarunui, stayed night at Whangamona camp with dinner at pub. Good drive thru countryside with bit of gravel but majority sealed. Recomnend

There's a long section of gravel road at the moment, caught us out as no warnings at the moment (29/03/19) Give yourself loads of time to do this and don't accidentally arrive onto the forgotten highway as to getting dark, few places to stay overnight and if you can't see the scenery then it's a long and winding road deep into some terrifying jungle, think lost but way worse...

We started onto the highway in Stratford, which we think is the better starting point, cause the road at the beginning is more challenging than towards the end. We soon noticed our expectations were set a little high. The landscape is nice, but nothing out of the ordinary. Just a lot of up and down and so many hills. Took us over 3 hours to drive. Not worth a detour in our opinion and we wouldn’t do it again.

Partial gravel road and not more than 30h / km possible. Otherwise nice.

Always nice :) Every time I'm in New Zealand, the Forgotten World Highway is a MUST (no matter what point you start)! There is hardly a nicer route to driving - Shire pure (for the nerds among you ^^). However, please concentrate on the road and stick to the given speed limits, especially the curves can be dangerous .. And do not forget the refueling before;)

Really nice views over the valleys! We did it in good weather so beautiful green landscapes!

Traveled from Stratford to Taumaranui on an overcast day in our 6.5mtr (under powered) motorhome.... No worries. Pleasant easy (but winding road) sealed drive with great scenery. Enjoyed a visit to the "Whanga Pub" nice bite to eat and a beer served by very friendly staff. Detoured off hiway to visit Damper falls, an easy 20 minute drive (each way) on sealed road then a nice 20 minute walk to falls, we thought worth the extra time. Stopped at Hobbits hole tunnel (hand carved tunnel on main road) for photo of camper, not far past this was 16k of metal road, yes metal but all flat and if you slow down, take your time it's easy and finished in 15 minutes or so. At the end of metal pull over to left side park area (before bridge) and take the 2 minute walk to visit grave site of Joshua Morgan, an early surveyor who died whilst working. From here you climb yet again another saddle (hill) we had a slip that had us delayed 2+ hours but enjoyed the stop and able to make a sandwich, joys of a camper. Some more meandering road through farmland and finally you pop out at Taumaranui. With the slip (delayed 2-3 hrs) and plenty of stops we comfortably and safely traversed the mighty Forgotten Hi Way easily in 8 hrs, would definately recommend to 7mtr and under motorhomes but maybe not large caravans.

Loved that road. Take your time, enjoy the views and drive carefully. Especially on the part that is not sealed. There are heaps of potholes, it's slippery in places and it's quite narrow when you meet another car. I didn't encounter any slips. Stop in whangamomona at the pub, enjoy the yum food and get a stamp in your passport. The Mt damper falls are worth the detour I think but you decide. It's quite a drive to reach them.
