A steep climb up steps to the summit lookout. We then continued along the ridge tops on the Hakarimata Southern Walkway for a couple of hours, meeting the Rail Trail at the bottom and then a path back along the road to the parking area at the start. Makes a good loop track of about three and half hours.
Great afternoon walk. This is a steep well maintained mixture of boardwalks, wooden stairs, and gravel path. Small waterfalls along the way and opportunities to see native birds like fantails and tui as well as native plants. The view from the top in the lookout tower is great. Times suggested are a bit overkill, just make sure to bring some water! Worth the stop.
Re-open! Amazing track for a good bit of exercise, the path is quite difficult to follow from the campsite but we managed to follow road signs! There at 1349 stair/steps on this walk, tough but totally worth it. Recommended to take 3 hours, but we walked up it in 45 minutes and ran down in 17!

Track closed because of storms....
Really great. I'm actually not that sporty and it was quite a challenge to climb up all the stairs, but it was still fun and the views are amazing :)
For all exercise lovers and guilty Icecream eaters. This is quite a challenging walk but you'll feel great afterwards! Lots and lots of stairs but nice motivational quotes along the way. If you think you are almost at the summit you are probably only halfway. Bring water and be prepared for shakey legs.
Don't make the mistake and walk up the road across the crossing. You'll end up at a house and there really is a path (even signposted with arrows). But it will end in the middle of nowhere and I had to slide down half a mountain through the forest. I ended up by a creek then and found the correct path. Which is really beautiful and, as normal in New Zealand, well developed. Unfortunately I didn't had the time then to keep on walking and had to turn around. You have to take the way past the kindergarden and the factory.
