Your journey begins north at the iconic Tui Brewery HQ in Mangatainoka. Enjoy a "brewer's lunch" and tastings on-site before heading 20 minutes south to Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre. To get the most out of this sanctuary, book a 1-Hour Guided Tour and stay for the 3:00 PM kaka feeding.
In the afternoon, head into Masterton. If you need a caffeine hit, Entice Café near the park is a local favorite. For those who prefer a head start on local provisions, Moore Wilson’s Masterton is the go-to for high-end regional ingredients. If you’d rather start your wine journey early, visit Le Grá Vineyard for a boutique, personal tasting experience.

For those looking for a more active day, take the short drive into the Tararua Forest Park and head up Gentle Annie Track - an easy to moderate trail to Mountain House Shelter and Rocky Lookout viewing platform with extensive views over the park and the Wairarapa Plains. For an early evening local pint at The Horseshoe Taproom is a great place to park up.

🌟 The Castlepoint Escape - Limestone Reefs and an Iconic Lighthouse
Approx. 175 km total driving (Masterton - Castlepoint - Martinborough) | 2.5 hours (excluding stops)
If you have an extra day, the short 60 minute drive out to Castlepoint is non-negotiable. Walk the gap between the towering Castle Rock and the limestone reef, or take the easy stroll up to the Castlepoint Lighthouse—one of the most photographed spots in the country.

If you’re feeling adventurous, the hike to the top of Castle Rock offers a panoramic view of Deliverance Cove. On the drive back, keep an eye out for Honeycomb Rock or stop in at one of the remote farm gates selling local produce. Stay the night at Castlepoint, or head directly on to Martinborough.

Day 2: The Artisan Drift to Martinborough

If you're travelling with a young family, make sure you start your morning at Queen Elizabeth Park - it's often rated New Zealand's best park for kids.
Your first stop after drifting south is the Carter Scenic Reserve, where short, flat boardwalks take you through rare remnant swamp forest. For lunch, stop at Urlar in Gladstone to sample their acclaimed organic wines.

Drop in to Cartertown on your journey south for brunch at Aunt Ginger’s Kitchen where you'll find delicious, local comfort food.
Continue on to Greytown, the region's style capital. Grab a sweet treat at SCHOC Chocolates, where you'll find hand-crafted sweets or all kinds, or browse the restored Victorian buildings.
By mid-afternoon, arrive in Martinborough. Park the van and visit the Neighbourhood Coffee Cafe & Roastery to fuel up before hiring an e-bike from Green Jersey Cycle Hire.

Day 3: Coastal Giants & The Rail Trail

Approx. 150 km total driving | 3.5–4 hours (excluding stops)
Today you head for the wild edge of the island. Before leaving the village, visit In the Neighbourhood Coffee House, the orginal home of the Martinborough Coffee Company and a great place to fuel up before hitting the road.
Your first major mission is Aorangi Forest Park to hike the Pūtangirua Pinnacles—massive gravel pillars that look like a movie set. On your way to the coast, stop at The Land Girl in Pirinoa; it’s a quirky, rustic stable-turned-cafe and your best bet for a hearty breakfast or brunch.

Continue to the Cape Palliser Lighthouse climb the 258 steps for the view, and visit the resident fur seal colony. For lunch, head to the fishing village of Ngawi and find the local food truck parked among the colorful bulldozers for some fresh fish and chips by the sea.
Afterward, loop back toward the Remutaka Range to Featherston, New Zealand’s "Booktown." This is the ultimate stop to stock up: visit C’est Cheese for award-winning NZ cheese.
