Day visit only. My shower was lukewarm, wifes in the one next door had hot shower. Toilets dark(daytime) and lights didn't work., take a torch. But at least they flushed and didn't stink like DOC camp nearby. Nice site and lot more room than DOC camp. Othee
40$ for two people feels a bit like a scam, when there is nothing included but the parking. Additionally, we stayed during a Friday and there was a group of people staying until late and being loud. Of course nothing to do about that, but again, it does not justify the price. Maybe the Okareka campsite further up the road is a better choice.
The campsite is beautifully located right next to the lake. However, the toilets are not clean and very dark, as we couldn't find a way to turn on the lights.
Great spot managed by kiwicash/penny. 20$ for an adult, there are everything needed, hot showers for 2$, toilets, drinking water… Nice view on the lake and no many people. Don’t forget to get your penny key
Beautiful campsite by the water.
Nice location, but expensive at $20pp Pros - easy access to lake, lots of parking, dogs allowed, playground, decent toilets, outdoor cold shower, picnic benches & grassy areas Cons - showers are extra, need KiwiCash tag. Bins emptied at 5am Sunday morning. FYI Payment by bank tfr, location not set up with KiwiCash although notice says to do . No cash option anymore
We loved our stay at the lake! Beautiful scenery! In the evening someone from DOC is coming for the money, $20 pp (preferably cash). On the sign it says bank payment but it isn’t working well (they know but can’t change it, it’s a choice from the council).
Beautiful spot on the lake, make sure to get KiwiCash before you get there, go to kiwicamp.nz to find stores you can buy one. $20 for the night and you can tap the card for hot showers. They have a nice little sink area for cooking too. As per usual please follow leave no trace principles and be a tidy kiwi, take your rubbish or throw it away properly! Leave every place better than how you found it, pick up a couple pieces of rubbish before you go !
Hreat camp so worth the money. Great clean toilet block and stunning grounds. highly recommend going for a swim in the lake.
To use the hot showers you need a Kiwi cash tag (not just the app). It's $2 for 7 minutes of hot water (the pay thing is inside the shower room). Cold showers seemed to be free and unlimited, and on the outside, but we didn't use them so can't say for sure. Toilets were not clean, and neither was the shower room. Also I couldn't see how to turn on the light in either shower or toilet, so made the experience a little extra gross. The guy who was supposed to collect our cash for parking therenever came. We waited past 9pm and he never showed up. Maybe because it was a holiday? It is a public park and it tends to get loud (some teens driving around with loud music and shouting at night and families playing in the morning). The view of the lake is pretty though.
