We checked with the DOC, if this campsite is actually free, since it is part of a Great Walk and bookable online via DOC website. DOC lady told us it is not free, you have to pay. Sadly the DOC pass is not usable here.

Free cell phone signal. Near the river. Sink and shelter available.

It does appear to be free now, some of the DOC signage is painted over. The toilets don't seem to be serviced much, no toilet paper, and one stank to high heavens. But they are there. There's also a little covered cooking area with a sink and water for dishes. It's a nice spot near the water, plenty of space, and a good starting point to get to Forgotten World Adventures early. No phone signal at all. I recommend.

Free now! A couple smelly toilets, water available from a tank in the left hand side back of the site (we filtered before use), tons of grassy space. No cell service. Incredible view of stars on a clear night! Would stay again.

It's hard to find, especially at night, but it's a decent place to spend a night. Lots of space, with a part of the roof for cooking and cleaning the dishes, quite dirty, but it does the trick, it has bathrooms but they disgusted us and we didn't use them. It said it was paid, but there was nothing to pay, so paying attention to the comments we stayed there for free. Nobody went to check, there was another person with a tent.

We stayed one night. The site was virtually empty with great spots viewing the river. There is no cell service - some may want that. If you’ve a license, fishing the bend could be fun. It was a good jump off point for the Forgotten World Highway. As previous commenters have said bring your own toilet paper!

This is in fact a free campsite now. No longer run by DOC. Bring your own toilet paper as the toilets have none. Beautiful site by the river!

A friendly camper who stayed here on weekends regularly told me that the camp site is no longer managed by DOC, and belongs to the Māori. It’s now a free camp site. Great little stay
