If you only have one day, go up to Luxmore Hut. The view is great. You can also take the water taxi from Te Anau to Brod Bay and start from there. It took us 2 hours to get to the hut and 1.5 hours back down. Once you are out of the bush it is windy in the open field, bring a sweater. Have fun!!! And don’t miss the water taxi on the way down.. otherwise you will walk 6km to the car park.
Awesome. Did it in two days with a night at Iris burnt, was quite challenging. You need a good training to do it in less than 3 days. The views from Luxmore to Iris burnt are incredible. The part from Iris burnt to Kepler car park is not the most interesting but the forest is nice and good views on lake and river, you can even go for a swim. I was afraid about the keas for my expensive tent, but the offer a storage place for the food at Iris burnt so you don't keep any food in the tent and it is OK. The ranger also have us a nice briefing about keas and other things.
Beautiful hike of 60 km in total, Luxmore and the ridges are a must, however you will spend a lot of time in the forest. Be careful in winter some places are frozen and some huts (Iris burn in particular) very humid!
Really good track for the day 30 km the end is a little bit long, do the cave in the top is a must.
I can prove that you can walk the track in one day. I just did it. BUT.... It was very challenging and would recommend it for trail runners or somebody who already walked the track and want to do some big workout :D I was feeling sorry I couldn’t enjoy more time in the most interesting part of the track (between Luxmore and Iris Burn as mentioned many times here). However. Do it! It was one of the top walks I have done in New Zealand during my one year.
Did as one day hike. Make sure you go further then Luxmore Hut and try to push yourself to Mount Luxmore or close. The views are just stunning. It took us 3,5 hours from carpark to the hut, 45mins lunch, then up to the Mount, and from the hut to carpark 3h. Forest is nice, and to be honest, in hot days you're happy to be in shade. We did total about 35km in approximately 8,5-9 hours. Caves are not really worth it if you don't have good torch and non slippery shoes, and any backpack..
Did a day tour of Mount Luxmore. The tour was very exhausting (approx. 1200 vertical meters and 35 km with return). Traveled a total of 9 hours. The view was nice, but if you come from Upper Bavaria nothing extraordinary ?
Very well-formed track. The landscape between Luxmore hut and Iris Burn is beautiful otherwise you will be walking in a tropical forest for the rest of the walk. Watch out for the Cheeky Kia birds, they are very lovely and love steeling your food and gear.
