People are underestimating how dangerous it can be on Robert Ridge and dying and having to be rescued from up there (1 dead last week and 2 being rescued) I have been along there in summer with full winter gear on because the wind chill was so low. In winter, with snow around, crampons are essential especially nearer to the hut. Having said that, it is a fantastic trip to make, if you have alpine skills, or in fine weather if you’re lucky! If bad weather comes in then the Speargrass route is the easiest way out.
It's a great hike up to Angelus Hut with stunning views. Could be cold and windy at the summit but the views are worth it. Unfortunately I lost my rain jacket (green and black) yesterday (14.05.2019) on the way back (via speargrass track). My passport is inside the jacket, so it's pretty important to me to get it back. If you find it, could you please take it to the DOC Visitor Centre in St Arnaud and call me (+64276201709) or send me a text message. Many thanks Maurice
What a beautiful hike! This one is definitely worth the effort. The views are so nice along the whole track and the hut is in a perfect spot. We went for 3 days and it was so amazing. Day 1 Angelus hut Day 2 Sabine hut via Mt Cedric track Day 3 back to Mt Robert carpark via speargrass track Pretty exhausting, but it really pays off. Every day completely different scenery. If we've had more time would have also gone to the Blue lake, but that would be extra 2 days..
Amazing track! Pretty tough but well worth it!! Take care if you're going through Speargrass Track because there are numerous river crossings and I fell in twice haha! However, the Mt. Robert Ridge Track is breathtaking!
Really great hike. You need to be medium - well trained though. In winter you might need a crampon etc. at some parts. In early spring it was possible with very thick shoes. Great views and a very nice sunrise at the hut.
Great in summer on a nice day. In winter, you will need alpine gear (crampons, ice axe, etc...). For experienced hikers only.
