Beautiful spot. Does get busy and some spots on the lower park are not flat. I stayed on the upper park in one of the regular spots (they have specific spots for non-CSC so please do not park there). Toilets were ok.
Beautiful spot (there are a lot of bugs in the air if you park right by the water), and the feeling of safety in numbers due to the large amount of campers parked up (but lots of space). There are 3-4 spots designated for non-self-contained vans in the upper parking area, but the larger (nicer) one by the water front has heaps of space for self contained vehicles. There is access to the approx 13km walk/cycle way that goes along the coast line to the town, it's a lovely bike ride with some food/coffee/ice cream trucks along the way.
Honestly one of the nicest spots on the north island. I stayed a few nights over labour day weekend - it was busy when I arrived on Saturday afternoon but was still able to find a spot. By sunday it had cleared out massively. Its a busy site overall but big enough that you could arrive late and still get a spot. There were signs advising not to go in the water or let your dogs in the water due to quality issues at the time but no one seemed to take any notice and some idiot let their dogs chase geese right into the middle island of the lake. Lovely walk around the lake and the coastal path with great views of taranaki. Clean toilets but no bins in the freedom camping area - there's some located in the day parking areas though. Good phone reception (spark) nice flat spaces. There's two car parks- one for self contained and one for non self contained which has 4 marked spaces clearly shown on the ground. Its a little confusing when you first go in but easy to figure out.
Not bad space for parking there are two relatively clean toilets it's quite quiet I recommend
Nice area with clean bathrooms and tap. Separate area dedicated to freedom camping with at least 15 spaces
Place is nice and there is plenty of place to park, just come early to make sure you get a spot where it’s flat. Phone signal very good. There’s Toi Tois. There is also a water station about 5 min drive from here. Can get pretty windy the site.
Very nice surroundings and walk ways to the river & sea. Take extra time to explore! Good toilet (only 1 though), can get full in the evening and in the morning from day time visitors. Some noisy cars driving by in the night, but it faded soon after. Mind the difference between non-selfcontained and ssc!
Nice place for freedom camping,6 marked space for NSC. Some noisy car driving around all night and speeding at parking.
Beautiful spot, but Beware!!! Don’t Overstay, or park in the wrong area!!! You will definitely get a $400 ticket!!! And this Council NEVER CANCELS TICKETS, Under Any Circumstances!!! Avoid the $400 TRAP!!!
