My tip: instead of a strenuous walk, just stroll along the beach – down the ramp and to the right. Parking is limited, the round trip takes about 2.5 hours – only at low tide. We walked back along the beach at low tide – BUT there are lots of slips, and for a long time we just had to step over rocks, with water in between. You often have to get much closer to the cliffs than recommended, as they are unstable and can slide away at any moment. The walk over the cliffs offers some nice views, but nothing special for the West Coast.

Make sure you come when it's low tide so you can walk on the beach and see the cliffs! I couldn't access the beach so I followed the walkway on top of the cliffs. Didn'tgo very far as there was loads of construction work and couldn't see the cliffs!

The ballad is closed until September or October it seems to me but you can walk on the beach is beautiful!

We did the loop walk on a beautiful winter’s day, (last day of June). It took us just over two hours return, first over farmland and through the bush, then back along the coast beside the magnificent cliffs one hour before low tide. We had the beach to ourselves and it was stunning. Parking is restricted but we found a place for our 6m camper on the side of the road.

Nice beach, but nothing special. Be aware of the tides if you want to do the walkway.

We did the loop walk, which is worth the efforts on a Clearwater dat. Nice views of cliffs and surroundings (bush). Please note the walk to Tongapurotu (is further than the loop walk) is currently closed at Hoho tunnel due to the chance of collaps of the tunnel. Check the tides, there is no passage except 2 hours on either side of low tide. Please note there is very limited parking space at beginning of walk. Only 2 or 3 cars fit. Loop walk is not difficult but take sturdy shoes, lots of rocks and slippery farmland near the beach. Max 2 hours walking time with fotostops.

Access to beach is 2 hours before and after low tide, after that the beach is flooded completely. The loop walk made me walk up 633 steps plus further elevation, but it was nice:) It is supposed to take 4 houres, but it’s possible in two (break included) as well?

Could not walk the walk because of the tide. What we saw did not bother us. LF

Check tide times before going as it might be impossible go thru during high tide. We went from parking lot to the river and back the same way walking on the beach. Was a beautiful beach with great water and rocks on the way. Absolutely lovelyyyy!
