Have to park on the higher site during the winter season which is fine. If you need the toilet go back to the lower nicer site which is open in the summer season. The toilets are drip toilets and have a fair few mozzies . 10/10 for cute ducks and cats
We came now in winter and the lower camping is closed. Upper camping open but a lot of cars, uneven, and so many bumps and holes to get in. It was quite slippery to get in and out. No bathroom, no water. If you go early maybe you get a better spot than us. Was crowded by 9pm.
The spot is really beautiful but since there is no ground marking, people park a little as they want in freestyle. Even if it means preventing other people from parking. Some even park in front of other vans... and the road is quite problematic. The ground has a lot of holes, a sloping floor. So not very safe for the tires and the sill of the van ahah! Too bad it was a nice place but I stayed there 5 minutes before leaving!
While it would've been nice down by the river, since it's maintenance season, it's rather a lovely parking view up the top. There's some undulating areas to park depending on your van size and some drivers chose some interesting spaces to park. Most of the 12 or so campers we're mindful of other vehicles. It's only a couple of minutes walk down the little hill to the long drop toilets from the top section. Take toilet paper with you on your first jaunt incase they have run out!
Overnight parking is not permitted in the parking lot below. However, you can drive a little further up the road. There's a very good view and it's quiet for sleeping. Several parking spaces are available there.
Parking for parking at night is very small as the rest of the parking is closed at night. (6 cars/vans maximum). first arrived, first served. Toilets ok. cleaned at 9.30 in the morning.
But there is another one 100m up the road, you can go there (: The toilets at the upper parking lot are broken and full of shit, people shat just in front of it.... Nothing to blame the Parking lot but still disgusting. There are still toilets at the first parking lot, just go there (2-3min walk). Great view over the river and morning sun!
Great spot. The Free camping is located further up the hill. If you go down next to the river that is for day use only and you will be asked to move your van when they come to lock the gate at night. There is some signage explaining it but its hard to see and we missed it on the way in
Only the upper part was open (the entrance ramp is right before the bigger area's one). There are not so many spots that are not sloped but I also arrived when it was getting dark so it was already full. The only bathroom stall was as bad as it could be, hadn't been taken care of in A WHILE. Was also pretty humid as it is above the river. Apart from that it was quiet, safe and the views were really nice.
Guten Tag fellow travelers.. try Equestrian Centre on Rapid rd out Rotokawa.... about 15 min drive North on H5 if Reids farm is full in upper area.. I have stayed there many at time it was $5 a nite.. cash only pay at a kiosk second entrance on right as you go in.. camping area is to left.. toilets, free good hot showers, kitchen is small though.. there are plug ins if you need power.. works for nite and quiet if no horse events are on.. just another option so go check it out.😊
