1. Savannah Way – Gulf Country

2. Goorrandalng Campground - Keep River National Park
For those heading between the NT and the Kimberley, Keep River is a spectacular overnight stop. Its dramatic scenery, cultural significance, and excellent walking trails offer a true Top End outback experience, far from the crowds. Just off the Victoria Highway near the NT-WA border, you'll find Goorrandalng Campground. It makes the ideal picture-perfect pit stop on your journey west. 3. Kata Tjuṯa – Red Centre

With camp pitches right on the riverbank and plenty of outback charm, it's an ideal base to unwind. Just five minutes from Glen Helen Gorge, it also offers some of Central Australia’s clearest night skies — perfect for stargazing straight from your swag.
6. Finke River – Red Centre
On second thoughts, this camp makes the list on its own merits! As one of the oldest river systems on Earth, the Finke winds through some of the NT’s most majestic landscapes. Remote campsites like Finke River 2 Mile Campground, are perched along the rivers length, and are perfect for travellers keen to get off the beaten track and experience the silence and clarity of the desert night.
7. West MacDonnell Ranges (Tjoritja)
Stretching west of Alice Springs, the West Macs are a stargazer’s playground. Camp at Ormiston Gorge or Ellery Creek Big Hole — all easily accessible for self-drivers.
