Great spot! We were a bit confused about where to park because the big carpark near this pin has ‘no camping’ signs. We ended up in the carpark near the coffee van and it was great. It did have some rules about when you can park there (see photo). The carpark was really busy around dinner time and then empty by 9pm and very quiet. Delicious coffee and pastries from the coffee van in the morning (after 7am)!
We had a positive experience. It’s a large area of the coast where you can stay. Some places are obviously signposted, but some you have to check the map on Christchurch council website.
Would recommend parking between Beatty and Sturdee Street, it’s within the free camp zone, has a nice beach access and isn’t too far from the toilets, parking next to them is a bit smelly. Didn’t have any problems with security, just make sure your self contained and don’t leave litter in the dunes as the residents aren’t happy about how previous travellers have left it out
There was a security guy checking all of the vehicles, so despite the comments saying that you’re not allowed to camp, it seems to us it’s fine. It’s a bit noisy, as you’re literally beside the road, but besides that it’s definitely okay. 👍
