Beautiful place for picnics and walks or even hikes. I did very scenic loop from this safe woolshed Creek carpark through Bus stop overhang, wildcamped at watercaves, summited Mt Sommers' North face and returned via miners track. Such variety of views even without summit! But definitely recommend to go up Mt Somers for the 360 Aoraki and Alps views, easier hike from Sharplin falls Park - south face.
We did the Mt Sommers track. Starting at Sharplin Falls staying over night at Woolshed Creek Hut and returning via the south face track. Doc says 8 hours and it took us approx 5.5 hours each day. There are plenty of options for shorter walks using both huts. Both huts now need to be booked online. Also the Sharplin Falls track is currently closed.
What a panoramic view during the entire ascent and descent, beautiful. You pass an old coal mine and information about it. I was at the hut in 2 hours 20 minutes. On the way back over the Rhyolite Ridge Track you come to a great swing bridge in the gorge. In front of it on the right is a small path that leads to a small waterfall. The break there was wonderful. To the very varied, absolutely worthwhile. Bees on the way back. The 4km Gravel Road is easy to drive there. No car breaks.
Really nice walk ! ;-) We park at wool shed creek car park, Went to the hut and back via mount somers tk. It took us 6h ! The view were amazing, it’s really worth it ! We really enjoyed it ! The hut is very nice , it’s a nice spot to eat ! The way down can be challenging for the knees .. The car park was safe this day, nothing happened to our van !
We started at Woolshed Creek Car Park via the Miners Track to Woolshed Creek Lodge. Did a little break there and then went back over the Mt Sonmers track south side and the Rhyolite Ridge Track back to the Woolshed Creek car park. A super nice hike of about 6 hours! Walking the round in the opposite direction is certainly much more exhausting. In addition, it gets very muddy and slippery in the rain. Good fitness should be available. But the effort is worth it!
A great hike with stunning views! We did it with snow (not a lot) so it was very pretty! 1) outward: Woolshed Creek car park - Miners track - Woolshed Creek hut. It took us 3 and 1/2 hours with big backpacks, lots of photos and playing with the snow :) The hut was VERY BUSY, with a group of about 25 teenagers and a group of 6 or 7 man on a stag do! Plus other hikers. 2) return: Woolshed Creek hut - Mt Somers track South Face - Rhyolite Ridge track. It says 3 hours and it took us 5!! I don't think we went that slowly... I thing the timing it's not very accurate on the indications Highly recommended!!
Very nice hike, cool and big huts and we were all alone on the track. We weren't comfortable leaving our car at the carpark tho since its notorious for vandalism and there were pieces of smashed glass all over the place. We called the farmer who is mentioned in the comment from 2015. She let us park at her place for 10$ and dropped us off at the start of the hike (the falls side)
We spent 3 days on the track. Enjoyed it! We parked the car at Sharplin Falls and stayed at Pinnacles Hut and Woolshed Hut. We can recommend that track because it never got boring. Because of some challenging steep (muddy) parts we were regretted that we did't take our hiking poles (sticks) on the track. Last day is the longest. We've seen many wasps on the way so take care if having an allergy. Worth to do!
Just superb take the miners route to the hut and the other back. You will have 6-7hours nice views into the alps. Car park is safe. ?
Great track but parking place seems to be a common car theft spot!
