Wow, beautiful drive to get here! Winding road, part sealed and part gravel but all in pretty good condition. One of the better backroads we have driven so far. Campsite has a number of sites right along the water, though the high tide gets pretty close to the bank, which is being eroded, so not sure how much longer some of those sites will be there! But there are a few other sites farther back, too. Beautiful cove, large wharf, lots of people driving in with kayaks and motorboats.
Three clean, flushable toilets, an enclosed (cold) shower, which is a big plus, and two sinks for washing dishes. No drinking water, so remember to stock up before you arrive. The view from the campsite was sublime. The campsite is completely full from December to mid-January. Lots of stingrays come to swim near the water's edge, and a few jellyfish too. Many fishermen. One of the most beautiful campsites we've stayed in, but not cheap: $20 per person per night. Good cell phone signal.
I wouldn't say that this campsite is worse than Elaine Bay like other comments below. It doesn't have grass and is $5 more expensive, but if you are in the area you definitely have to go there because the views are amazing, and the spots in Elaine Bay are first come, first served, so you might arrive later because of this. In French Pass you can book online and secure a spot with a number, have flush toilets and the beach is better IMO. Both campsites are nice, so choose the better to your plan!
There is a Road to the Campsite, so it's accesible by car! Not a lot arround but worth driving there because of the stunning Views!!!
We were here mid December and loved it. If the weather is good, it's definitely worth taking the tour to this campground. We had some of the best views in New Zealand along the way. The campground is nothing special, but it offers everything you need: Cold showers and water (which you'll have to boil)
It’s a bit of a hassle to get here but the views along the way were breathtaking! The site is facing the water, with clean flushable toilet. Beautiful sunrise. $15 per person.
Shower closed due to lack of water and non-drinkable water (even boiled it tastes very bad), without prior communication. Suitable for self contained. The road is worth the detour but prefer Elaine's Bay which offers the same services and has a much nicer view.
Stunning drive to this beautiful place. Basic facilities but enough and clean. It wasn't busy when I stayed there yesterday - just 3 other Camper and a group of youths who were having a good party at the campground. I don't mind - they had fun :) amazing sunrise. Windy though. No sandflys. If you are lucky you can see the 'natural whirlpools' at the Lookout
One of our favorite places we’ve stayed in NZ. Beautiful view, clean toilets, cold shower, quiet. Was only one other camper there. Saw sting rays down at the beach. Watch out for the wekas and don’t leave anything outside unattended.
We stayed there for one night without a pre-registration. The camp wasnt full during the camp. A beautiful but exhausting road to get there. We habe seen the rays and the come really close to you. Simple toilets and a cold shower available. No sandflies.
