Stayed 1 night. A nice, quiet campsite opposite Robin Hood Bay. No phone reception, one long-drop toilet, under power lines if that bothers you. This site is actually FREE, suitable for vehicles and tents, as per the DOC website. Gravel road from White's Bay is very windy but doable, even in a 3-tonne high-roof LWB Transit, but if you aren't a confident driver then be mindful. Much sunnier than White's Bay, with a nice pebble beach which sometimes has surf.
My name is paura/paul, I'm the guardian of this bay, I live up in the forest, south side, you're welcome to visit and gain free bush skills, free bush medicine and free hunting advice, I'm incharge of protecting the Maori land were a princes has fallen, there is burial grounds in this bay so please respect it, If the farmers bothering you, come and make a formal complaint please 🙏 First drive on left, top of the hill heading towards ocean bay, Sign on gate says,SHARED ROAD,NO HUNTING,KEEP OUT.
The best beach cove camp I’ve ever stayed at, such a shame tho these thugs in a black Ford 4x4 pickup truck (REGO: HQK 398) came round at 10:40PM and did a drive by on my van, smashing in one of my back windows. :( Police were called and taking this to court.
Beautiful spot close to the beach. Absolutely no telephone service (on spark and one nz). The gravel road can be a bit tricky and you need to go over a hill but otherwise really great, calm, some curious wekas.
Gravel road open on 05/10/25. Nice small campsite, view of sea with pebble beach, drop toilet but clean. No phone signal. Might get busy in summer as not many spaces to park.
Road is open again 09.25. Looks like there's still some work being done, new gravel for most of the way, so might be closed again or partially closed. Doable with a small campervan. No cell reception
CAUTION !! : The road is closed (from july to end august), we arrived in front of the road and we could not take it ...
Vicious ax murderer killed three of my friends. Despite that me and my other 2 friends had a lovely time. Would recommend
+ The bay is certainly beautiful and worth the tough drive on the gravel road in our opinion. Great waves to surf. Relaxing spot. - The toilet is very dirty so I would only recommend to self-contained travelers A dog was constantly pooping in the middle of the camp site. We cleaned it but eventually realized the owner was right there watching but wouldn’t pick up! We also have a dog at home... this is completely antisocial behavior and very odd especially around children and babies.
Ok for one night, a few spots available. Non flush toilets on the campsite. Very close to the sea so noise of the waves during night and very windy. And be aware that the road to access this campsite is gravel road!!
