Really good place to stay. Has a bathroom, sink with non-drinkable water (but good if you boil it) and a shed with a table and fireplace. There is plenty of space to park but make sure you get early to find a flat spot. We were alone now with Bred (lovely man you might get to know him, he volunteers there and stays some nights). Shed was perfect for the rain. Seems camping site gets really crowded in summer because of the tongariro 😔
It was a really nice site quite in the middle of nowhere, so really quiet. We really enjoyed it as a family. However, we had issues with our phone signal there.
A great place to stay for one night before and/or after the Tongariro Crossing. Very quiet and secluded location.
Very good to stay before and after Tongariro crossing, only 20min drive away the shuttle. The area gets very cold though compared to for example Taupo. Has a working fire place which was nice.
A good place to spend the night near Tongariro for the Alpine Crossing. There's a toilet and plenty of parking. There's also a covered area in the center where you can have a fire. Recommended.
Nice quiet DOC site. Pretty much a parking space with some grassy areas for tents. The centre has a covered table and benches with a wood fire available. There is water from a rain catch, but was pretty unpleasant after a few weeks of dry weather. River water is very clean with no upstream industry. Was busy for 2 nights i stayed, mostly people heading to the tongariro crossing the next day.
Nice spot in forest close to river. The main bit is a grave park with a few secluded tent spots around the edge and a sheltered fire area. Before the bridge there are also a couple of cosy tent or van spots. We arrived at 5pm on a Tuesday in March and it was nearly full, but possibly that was because of a large school group.
Large parking lot in the middle of the woods. We felt safe. The toilet is a dry toilet, but clean. It's a good idea to bring toilet paper just in case.
Great spot, easy long drop loo, lots of easy places to park overnight, close to river and walking tracks. 2nd time here, and will be back again. Please take your litter and double check before you leave!!!
Free according to the DOC website. Nice place, easy to get to, optimal for doing the Tongariro crossing the next day.
