Yeah really some shags on the tree nesting with their youngs and under it there are two hammocks and a swing. I've seen just adults before by the ocean.
Go over the bridge and then to the right. After 200m you can see the nesting birds from close. Cool!
Worth a short stop. You can watch some birds.
Just saw a bunch of them today. Not too many but if you're patient and have your eyes open, you'll see them
In September: Cormorants are in their nest, you will not see many. But nice walk on the beach overlooking Kapiti Island. A nice little stop to go on Wellington.
If you go through the SH1, then make the detour if you have a little time. As soon as you climb the bridge across the river, look to the right, there are dozens of cormorants in the trees along the river, it is beautiful (I was there at sunset, around 17:45). Cross the bridge and approach them. Be careful, a sign tells you that you are entering at your own risk. The trees are not stable in the sand. I was not windy and the crunch of the trees gave a special atmosphere! I do not know if we can access the beach by this bridge, maybe going further.
It was quite something, about 50 birds on the trees, that was about 8pm. Not something I had seen before.
We saw a couple of shags and nests in the trees. Nothing to spectacular, but it's just a short detour :)
