Honestly, you get 90% of what is to seen by just taking the short walk up to the viewing point, which is spectacular. Doing the loop walks add very little.
The landscape and the one hour walk were not really special. The track was quit muddy.
Great place for birding and beautiful views. Better in afternoon or evening for pictures when the sun is more to the west.
Excellent. To do absolutely. Seeing stretches of water with beautiful snow-capped peaks in the background...breathtaking!
I did the longest route. The signs for me were a bit confusing and some trails are covered by water quiet deep. But for us, the journey was so fun because we had to take off our shoes to cross the water. One of it is literally like a river. The view is amazing and we saw many birds.
We were a bit worried after the previous comment about the angry bird, but we survived without being attacked!?We did the small 1 hour loop,as the weather was not that great, but it was still pretty nice walk, even on cloudy day we could see the snowy mountain tops, the wetlands are nice, with ducks, black swans and some other birds.. Good for stretching our legs on the way to Te Anau! ..Oh and nice clean flushing toilet at the beginning of the track (not directly by the carpark, you have to climb a bit first;)
Hey people, warning ⚠️ !!! Today I took one of the most beautiful hikes since I came here. The landscape is breathtaking. I chose the longest trail. After a short time a bird attacked me and came towards me in a dive. I unexpectedly tore my backpack up and he turned away from me 2m and flew to the sky. A few minutes later he attacked again on a dive on my head this time from behind. I decided to continue the walk anyway because I thought I had only entered his breeding area. However, I was wrong, he attacked me on the track up to eight times. In hindsight, I found out that it is a flute bird that seems to be known for attacking humans during its breeding season (August-October). Pay attention!!! I came away with a shock and would advise against the trail to run.
Closed for lambing sept 9 to sept 29
Such a beautiful place on a sunny day! We did the 2 hours walk in the wetlands surrounded by the snowy mountains and we saw plenty of birds. One of the most amazing places we have seen so far in N.Z. <3
Sighted a fernbird here this morning.
