Do not attempt to ride this track from the Southside of the lake. It was truly the hardest track I've attempted.. I walk it.
The road is closed..
Really lovely for a walk but unless you are very experienced don't attempt on a bike. A lot of steep, rocky sections in the middle where sections have been washed away and a couple of sets of steps.
Description from DOC website: Starting (or ending) at the road end just past Sunny Bight picnic area, the Lake Kaniere Walkway is a four hour tramp around the western shore of Lake Kaniere. The walkway emerges at the southern end of the lake on the Dorothy Falls Road. Highlights of the walk include many picturesque bays, numerous forest streams and lush lakeside forest. A lookout point over the lake is offered part way up Mt Upright/Te Taumata o Uekanaku. There are numerous places to take a dip. Or when you have finished walking or riding Hans Bay is a popular local swimming spot.
Great walk, 11 km or 3.3hrs
You may also make this walk from the other side of the lake. There is no real destination. It's also possible to shorten the walk and make only a part of it, without missing out on much.
