Stayed here Monday 7th September. Amazing spot, so peaceful and absolutely loads of spaces, but there were only 3 other vans there. Make sure to check the map on the sign, I had to get out and walk up to it to see the parking area properly. It is just past the toilet/kitchen/shower block. Toilets are free and clean. Needed a Penny card to access anything else, but there are kitchen, potable water, laundry, and hot showers available.

Good campsite, with clean flushing toilets (incl toilet paper), and a range of penny key facilities. $2 for a hot shower was totally worth it! Clothes washing facilities were cheaper than liquid laundromat too. Parking isnt too flat, but plenty of space. Not much sun, if you need solar, as surrounded by tall pines. Dog friendly too. Site was pretty busy when i stayed, about 15 vehicles in the end, but not at capacity, so was ok.

Great place to spend the night. Quiet and with plenty of amenities, including laundry and showers, plus a picnic area. 100% recommended.

Super camping, very quiet, in the midst of large trees. Need a Penny key to use the shower, washing machine or laundry, but the toilets are freely accessible. There is also wifi near the common area.

Really lovely site! main car park area with loads of space next to toilets & showers or towards disc golf area you can camp in the trees Toilets smelled a bit but seemed clean, didn’t use shower, laundry system was good. As everyone has said you need the penny thing. Stayed two nights but sadly left this morning scared.At 3am a car beeped from locking, and for the next three hours we heard someone walking/standing around our van. Didnt touch doors or van. So freaky. Police and rangers informed.

Great location next to the Mangowera track. Approx 15-20 spaces. FYI The freedom camping area will be closed Friday Apr 9 5pm until the storm passes.

Really nice site, however if you don’t have a penny key of your own you can’t use showers or laundromat which is really annoying.

(Seems to have now reopened - 29th March) Lovely free campsite. Heaps of space and shade. Easy, well-signed access - totally fine arriving after dark. Toilets (flush) are free, clean and accessible. 3 bars signal on OneNZ If you get a kiwi cash tag in advance, hot showers are great and it’s super having stovetops/washing up sinks/charging stations/laundry available. (Only issue an inconsiderate camper who started playing music with a thumping bass line at 0630 in the morning - why do this?)

Amazing free camp! Even free wifi near facilities and if you need there are showers and laundry. Just make sure you purchase penny key in advance!

**UPDATE** March 26 the freedom campsite is closed (probably due to the weather) We stayed on March 25th and we had a great experience, plenty of space, great toilets. We didn’t use the facilities
