Very few spots are actually fenced off for camping — and yes, they check in the evening, so make sure you’re inside the lines. Once you are, it’s campervan Tetris: side by side, door to door, breathing each other’s dinner. Facilities exist (we didn’t investigate), and there’s a dump station. The beach itself is genuinely lovely. The parking situation? Intimate. 7/10 seaside sardine life.

Good site, toilets OK, facilities OK. Access to the beach. No showers. Be VERY CAREFUL about parking rules, as not all parking spots are for freedom camping and it is not evident when you arrive; look for the posters explaining the rules, there is one near the toilets and dump station. Lots of people got a 400nzd fine during our visit, as the posters are rather difficult to find. Also, larger campers and caravans may be a bit tight in the parking spots.

Room for 10 vans. Caravanners take up two spaces for some selfish reason. Dump station, potable water & toilets here. Don't park outside of signed area as Security comes around & will move you on - at midnight- as they did last night to a few vans. Thanks Waihi/BOP Council for this Freedom Camp !

Be really careful where you park and how you park. It states very clearly on signs to park betwen two green verges but also park within the lines of each space left and right,front and back. If you are too far back or forward in the parking space because of lenght/ poisitoning to get side doors open and closed (as spaces are regular parking size spaces so can be tight) you will be ticketed which is a $400 fine.

Beautiful long sandy beach just behind the hill. Approx. 10 parking spaces with a wastewater station, playground and toilet block.

The loudest toilet ive ever used. Is making an incredible loud and high noise!
