No toilets. Drive in and out would be a problem with a large vehicle Stunning spot once you are there.
Lovely wee spot, recommended by someone in Whakatāne. We were one of two vans there, who stayed overnight. Arrived for sunset, fire pits already “established” with rocks around it. Gravel road was a wee bit hairy getting back up the hill at points but we managed it in our small converted van. Toilets were shut, we had self contained van.
One of my best free campsites, very quiet, I was alone. There's no sign indicating it's a free campsite, but honestly, it's not a problem. The toilets don't work, and there were no other residents around in the morning. The two other campsites were very pleasant. It's a gravel road; I drove it in a van without any problems, but it might be best avoided in heavy rain. Good phone signal.
Very beautiful, we stayed there a night. However, this is probably not an official freedom campsite. On Gisbourne Council Website this site is not listed and camping in not named campsites is technically forbidden. The place was extremely beautiful and quiet. It is on a cow pasture, so they can come pretty close. And the last bit of the gravel road was a bit scary. Recommend 4x4 or a car with enough space to the ground. Toilet there is broken, so have yours ready.
Amazing spot! It's magnificent! Lots of space and not many campsites. Toilets unusable. Gravel road at the end, but easy enough for a van! 4G signal available.
The first few KMS on paved road go through some slips, so no long vehicles at the moment. The gravel road is fine. Compost toilet and gravel beach. There is a lot of silt from the storms, so not the cleanest beach for swimming
The gravel road leading to the campsite is a bit intimidating, especially if you have a large campervan. It's narrow and bordered by a small ravine, but it's worth it. The site is superb, even in the rain. Magnificent trees, large boulders, and a small stream. I didn't try the toilets, but the location is great and there's 4G reception.
Stunning scenery and very peaceful. There were a few other campers here when we arrived. Right on the waters edge. Signal good. We didn’t use the toilet as it was disgusting but other than that can’t complain. Definitely the most beautiful campsite we have found so far on our road trip
One of the most spectacular places we’ve been. It’s clean, quiet and so so beautiful. A decent flush toilet as well!
A short stretch of gravel road to get there. The place is very beautiful and pleasant. Toilets are available.
