Honestly such an epic hike, don't miss this one out! We had a great time and started at the end at around 8am, walked to the peak and then back down, which is a little tougher but mean we could park on the highway near that end back to our van. Wear good footwear, bring 1.5L or more of water, plenty of snacks and some sun cream too. It's a long trip with lots of inclines but the paths are pretty nice up until the final ascent to the peak where you have to embrace the loose ground!

We made the crossing on March 6th. For people who regularly go alpine hiking, the tour is long but not difficult. If you don't have good equipment or no hiking experience, this tour is not suitable. We had -9 degrees Celsius and a very cold, strong wind. Gloves, a hat, sturdy shoes, and several layers of clothing are essential, even in summer.

I was very surprised to see very few people carrying their 10+ essentials. Remember your Ts of hiking here folks. You are going up into the mountains. And volcanoes at that. This is not a stroll around a park. Today I saw lots of questionable footwear choices and then these are the people that wonder why they’re shitting their pants going down volcanic scree. Don’t want to be a harbinger but no one wants to be a SAR call (assuming you get cell service). The track itself was beautiful and mind blowing.

Absolutely incredible! L, especially at the moment with no tourists it’s so quiet. Highly recommend the parking with a shuttle to the start so there’s no pressure to catch a shuttle at the end. Take snacks, lunch, plenty of water and all the layers! You need full thermals, puffy, waterproof and decent walking shoes/boots, sun hat, wooly hat, gloves and suncream - believe me I used them all!

“We can't agree more! Plan My Walk lists all the track details including this essential gear list, weather forecast, map and video, not to mention recent track reviews. www.planmywalk.nz”

Very sweaty and long. Without the time pressure from the shuttle service, it would have taken us 9 hours (mid-20s). But the view is unbeatable on a sunny day.

The crossing was incredible. We did it on a windy day so started a little later (8:30am). Anyone is able to do this trek, if you take your time and know your limits. The winds at the top when we went were extremely dangerous to people who don’t have experience on loose surfaces, but if you are prepared you will be okay. The red crater and lakes are stunning and worth every step. Overall the trek was mildly difficult for us (average fitness, 19) and we finished it in 5 & 1/2 hrs with only one drink break as we didn’t want to stop in the windy parts. I definitely recommend this trip for everyone to do once in their lives and if there is anytime to do it, now is it. Usually in busy season there is around 5,000 people a day. We saw about 10. If you want to do it, do it now.
