Do not skip this amazing “4 hour” hike! It only took us 2 hours, but we do multi day hikes. It definitely is a climb but so worth it. Just wear hiking boots and bring a light jacket for the top! We saw a Kea and the sunset ? a beautiful view.

Long gravel path to the lake. When we got there there were a lot of sand flies waiting for us. However, the lake was quite beautiful.

Beautiful lake. Good opportunities for walks or longer hikes. Was worth it!

Current condition of the track (5/6/19): it is very muddy, there is standing water on the lower part of the track on multiple spots, one stream is running on the path a bit higher up, there are a couple of stream crosses of which one is difficult, there is snow and some ice on the rocks at the top, it is very slippery especially on the way down. It is still doable if you are up for an adventure and not fussy about getting muddy. I would do it if you have time but otherwise not, as it is not as amazing as some other tracks. The gravel road is in good shape and fun to drive on because you do feel like you are a bit on ice.

The track to the lookouts is indeed « steep and rough ». Be aware than coming down takes approximately the same time as going up because it is tricky with mud, roots... Sole of the steepest and trickiest parts are at the top... I made it to the first lookout in a little more than an hour, with stops on the way. The first lookout is at the end of a cliff so just be aware if you suffer from vertigo (like I do...). So I didn’t go to the second one. ROAD : yes, be careful because the road between the camping area and the lake is slippery! Even when he doesn’t rain.

Superb lake. The steps proposed are very pleasant, the small can stretch your legs between beach and forest, the other can reach a view overlooking the lake. The times are very clearly overestimated for the two steps: - The small loop is about 1.5 km without level difference, so you will have more for 20 minutes (not 40). - To get to the point of view, it's 2.5 km and about 400 m of altitude difference. You will have for 2h walk round trip if you are in shape and have a safe foot, and 3h walk by going more slowly, but certainly not 4h. WARNING: The road between Thicket Burn Campground and the lake is very slippery when it rains!

I took the 4 hr return track to the lookout. It’s steep and an adventurous trail. Climbing over trees and using their roots as steps or handles to pull me up. But it’s achievable; each way took me 1h 15 mins more or less and I’m not very fit. Maybe wear long pants as you walk through some long grass / plants which irritated my shins.

Definitly worth the long gravel road! Nice lake and beatiful walk around it (40 min loop walk) - be careful with the sandflies though
