Very nice spot but 18km of gravel road with no exit and no network…
The spot is unbelievably beautiful and peaceful. BUT the waterskiing place is open again and they wouldn’t let us use their facilities cause we were no club members. So self contained is necessary I guess.
Don't go there in the middle of the night. We arrived there very late in the dark and we didn't find the right way. There is a junction and you have to make the desicion between left, right and the middel. At the beginning from the way in the middle is the sign so we thought we have to go that way. It ended in a disaster cause we stuck. The way don't go through so you have to turn around which is really dangerous. Otherwise you have to drive the way completely backwards, dangerous as well. There are heaps of hills and huge lawn. Never go that middle way with your car. After we got free in the morning, we found the real campsite and it was absolutely beautiful. You can have a swim in the river and you are mostly alone, cause you have to drive nearly 18 km gravel road first. It's kind of risky but beautiful as well.
The spot is very nice, once you managed to get there. BE CAREFUL! At the very end of the gravel road, after you passed some benches on your right, is a junction. Do not follow the path in the middle, even if the camp sign is up the hill. Take either the right or the left road to get to the campground. The way in the middle will lead you to a dead end for normal cars an campervans with no oportunity to turn around.
Impossible to reach the freecamp with our car .. 18km of rocky road ... unless you have a pick-up, the way is too dangerous if you do not want to burst a wheel in the middle of nowhere ... Too bad
Absolutely unbelievable. A Freedom campsite on a promontory in a lake in nowhere. When we arrived here, we could hardly believe our luck. No soul far and wide. An abandoned Waterski Club with benches, BBQ spot, access to water and running water. However, we chose a place a bit away. According to the sign you can camp in the 100meters around the toilet at the water ski club. Whether we have kept that, I do not know. Were but 2 days and nights alone (mid-November). To date, the best camping experience in New Zealand.
