Stunning!! Fell in love with the freedom camp in Pouawa. So much space to find the perfect spot to either tuck away underneath the trees or park right by the beach. The beach and ocean are a perfect mix of sand and rocks, great swimming, stunning views of the hills. Highly recommended. There are also septic tanks and rubbish collection along the road.
Permits online now up for up to 2 nights. Have gone up quite quickly. Ok if a few people but getting up there for solo travellers
Closed outside of daylight savings, gorgeous drive along the coast though.
Lovely area right on beach. We found more flat sites at the northern end. Toilets are disgraceful so don’t assume you can use them Lovely beach to go for a walk along.
Only four other camper here and they were at the other end of the beach. Bit of road noise but still a pleasant place to camp.
Although super busy was able to find a lovely spot near the ocean, despite all the people was very quiet and peaceful. Locals were friendly and was great for a night. Dominated by locals who live here months at a time in their motor homes and tents. Seems to be the case for all the camping spots along Gisbourne coastal areas. Was hard to find a spot to pull up in our campervan. Long drop toilet is totally unusable and as a kiwi I've seen my fair share of long drops-just a heads up!
Nice spot
Great spot absolute beachfront. Has a long drop toilet. Avoid on a weekend if possible as half of Gisbourne heads here and parties all night!
Beautiful camp spot good on GDC
