We were the only van when we arrived. You can’t park your car on the grass or you’ll get stuck, we tried and almost got stuck…. But we just parked on the side of the road, half on the grass, half on the road and it was perfectly fine. ? Another car parked at the front of the lake so it is still possible to stay there. Very basic doc toilet (hole in the ground). Definitely fine for a night. ?
It is a beautiful spot, but sort of flooded now, so there is only place for like 3 cars.. But still amazingly calm.
I was able to drive down and sleep for a night with no trouble or anyone else around. Hard to find the entrance to the campground and can be very muddy after rain. Not exactly sure where I was supposed to park but as no one else was around, it wasn't a problem
20/04/2022 It’s closed until further notice. We came here to find out.

Feels like home Whānau.
Beautiful spot right on the lake. Not marked on Google maps correctly but when it says you are almost there and you should make one last sharp turn, the turnoff is actually at the start of that turn on the left. Hard to see if you come in at night. But great spot!
Beautiful place right on the lake. Location not where Google says. Would be a left turn (coming from Wairoa side) in the middle of a bend, right across from the sign to the old maori trail track. Can even get some cell service and data (!) if youre close enough of the sign with the map of the lake...
Awesome campsite! Beautiful sunset and straight in front of the lake. Definitely recommend it. The only problem is the gravel road to get there.
Well it's free and close to the lake so the spot is quite good. But the mark on Google maps is wrong (about 500m too far) and the sign for the campground is literally ON the campground. So its easy to miss. The entrance is directly opposite of the old Maori trail in a corner. The only toilet is a bit far from the spots where you set up your tent or park your car (about 60sec walk). No problem as long as it's not raining...
