It’s a long 35 km gravel track… but we could do 50kmh along it, so no issues. In early August, we stopped between the 2 lakes by the boat launch slipway, and had the place almost to ourselves. Even managed a cold swim in the lake. Several long drop toilets. All clean. No phone signal. Beautiful views over the lake. Highly recommend.
One of the most beautiful camping spots on the South Island for $10/person. Loads of space spread out over North and South lake. We put our tent down near the South lake with almost no neighbors. Toilets if needed. The gravel road is long but super worth it. + many lord of the rings film locations nearby!
Booked online for $10pp. Stunning site, very few other campers, plenty of room. Absolutely no phone signal so best to download an offline map before heading here. Drop toilets. A few sandflies but nothing dramatic. The north lake has much more room than the south lake, would definitely recommend heading there. 37km of gravel roads to get there but worth it for the serenity.
Raised the price, update your site, unsealed road with most driving to fast for conditions, alot if dirt bike bikes. Not that it makes a difference, but motor boats where there shouldn't be any. Doc does a poor job of policing their sites except when it comes to fees.
When we arrived we saw honest to god +20 dirt bikes cruising around. Also driving here takes 40km on a dirt road so if you have toyota estima you are not go a have a good time driving here
It's beautiful but the sandflies and some people on dirt bikes ruin it
Fantastic stay. Lots of selection of sites and was so nice to have and cook on a fire at our site. Beautiful views. Note, no cell service.
Amazing place to camp, so spread out and tons of spaces. We had an entire field to ourselves without another person in site. Road is decent, we just took it a little slower in our van but very doable with any vehicle or camper. Flies as you’d expect. $8 per person. Great fire pits to make fires. There was lots of rubbish in a bunch of the campsites - must’ve picked up a full rubbish bag worth. This spot is beautiful so please remember to pack everything out with you. LOTR film sites were a huge bonus. So cool to have so many very obvious spots close by. Frodo’s tree, merry and pippin’s hiding spot, the beach, the orc mound, all fantastic. Would love to have stayed here for weeks.
Loved the place. Very calm and relaxing by the lake. The gravel road to the lake is in a good condition. The toilet are very clean and it's fun to finally make a fire.
What an awesome camping area and big bonus that dogs are allowed on leads. Our dogs loved it and we met lots of other well behaved dogs. Will definitely be back. ?
