When we went, it was very quiet, a beautiful and well-maintained place. There were some maintenance works along the road when we were coming back in the morning, and the road was closed for those heading there. When we went, it was around 5pm and the road was open. Our car is not 4WD, but with care and as long as it’s not raining, it’s manageable.

The road is OK for a small camper taking it slow. We did it in a 7m Sprinter - but wouldn't recommend this if you've just picked up one from the airport and are unfamiliar with bigger vehicles. Esp in high season. The last 20km is unsealed, tight and you can barely pull over... and can't turn around until half-way - at which point you've done the hard part. That said, the forests on the drive are truly spectacular and the campsite is NZ idyllic.

This campsite is stunning. We drove at night so it was definitely not as easy getting up the road but it’s worth it. We drive a high top hiace with NO 4WD and we just took it slow. The road is paved half of the way then dirt road but have dealt with worse. One of the best campsites I’ve been to and will be back in summer!

The one of the best free camp I ever was! So peaceful, lovely nature, mountains around the camp! The toilet was very clean! The road wasn’t that bad as people wrote in previous comments. Definitely recommend! Peel Ridge (5km) is a good hike and you can continue to Lake Peel hike (5km)

It’s uncrowded and beautiful, but I don’t think it’s worth the drive. Wouldn’t camp here again.

Really nice camp area. The long drop toilet was very clean while we were there. Road was well maintained few pot holes, typical kiwi road. We took a 2wd Van and really enjoyed our time. Sandflies were very intense in the morning but dropped away in the evening. Recommend taking your own firewood as there wasn't much dry wood around. Would definitely stay here again

Road in really poor condition . Very hard unless 4x4 vehicle. Definitely NOT for campervan or low clearance 2wd cars. Lots of slips and large rocks have fallen on the road. Campsite very muddy due to rain and someone has done wheelies all over the campsite and ripped it up. Great wilderness area otherwise. Toilet a smelly long drop. River water only source of water. Wekas will steal anything you put down for a. Moment cheeky sods

Pros: Beautiful spot nestled away in the mountains and I would say it is worth the drive in like others have said. Spectacular walks all around, and I recommend the Peels Ridge with beautiful views looking right up the valley. We were pretty much on our own every night except for 1 other camper who set up on the other side of the camp. Cons: We were in our 2WD L300 van and had to take it real easy on the very unsealed and pothole-ridden roads. There are quite literally thousands and thousands of sandflies, especially as it rained for 2 of the 3 days we were there. It was very humid too, so our van got very condensated and we ended up having to leave early so we could dry it out somewhere else. Overall it is a beautiful spot, but if you can try to go in nice weather as the rain makes everything soaked. And also bring insect repellent; you'll need it!

Awesome camping spot! Drop toilet was quite clean but a bit smelly. The road up is steep and can get quite corrugated and you will find quite a few potholes on your way ? Should be easy with a 4WD, take enough time with a 2WD

This place is Magic! Highly recommend if you are competent on NZ gravel roads. So many walks to keep you busy, we stayed 3 nights and definitely could have stayed longer.
