Beautiful spot. We were there with a self-contained motorhome, so we did not use the pit toilet. Because of the sandflies we stayed inside as much as possible. There were several campers (tents and motorhomes). Grass area was reasonably flat. But luckily we stayed on the gravel. All night it had been raining hard, so in the morning we could drive off easily.
Peaceful spot, nice enough facilities with a pit toilet. No signal. Lots of sandflies so cover up.
A disappointing DOC site. We usually love the DOC sites and that one surprised us for the worst. 1. DO NOT PARK ON THE GRASS! The designated grass for parking campervans in the upper park is not suitable for non-SUV vehicles! We drove with our van and got stuck! Even though we checked it first by foot and it seemed dry. 2. The toilets are ok but pretty dirty. 3. There is no drinking water (there is non-drinkable water hose). 4. No cellphone reception.
For 18$ pp per night we expected the site will be maintained a bit more but got stuck in the grass as it was wet but not visibly muddy (no prior rain) - and this was for all the designated payed spaces. Ended up getting towed and parking on gravel (free spots at same campsite). Also no cellphone signal and flies.
Book ahead as cell signal is weak and there are only a few spots. But like others said beware of the sand flies. Best if you have a camper and screens to get a breeze. Pit toilets were simple but breezy, bring a torch at night as there's no lights.
Nice place, the places reserved online are right at the top. Lots of sand flies, bearable in a camper. No cell reception (one).
Minimal phone signal and lots of sandflies but a solid place to stay for one night. Toilets were clean and there was a shelter with bug screens which was very useful. Lots of space and not busy when I was there
(tent site 26/02/2024) the spot is really nice, with spongy flat terrain for tents. toilets were alright, usual longdrop with untreated running water tap outside (coudln’t/didn’t find a sink?). The most annoying thing were the sandfly swarms that are onto you in no time, killed about a hundred whilst trying to read my book outside. Also, if you’re staying in a tent, beware of this cockrel which apparently lives there on its own, poor thing. He crowed 5-7am and was annoying af, DOC get it out!
The campsite itself is ok. Toilets are a bit stinky and there is a nice shelter. The worst are the sandflies. We just stayed there for 10 minutes because they just have been too many.
Run away and go to the free camp further on. We just arrived and were attacked by a hundred sandflies. We left as quickly as we arrived with about sixty of them in the van to remove, a real joy...
