Everything You Need to Know About Kaikōura

Updated 29/09/26

Kaikōura – it's famously known for where the mountains meet the sea.

Located on the east coast, at the Top of the South Island, Kaikōura is one of those places where the mountains and ocean come together in a way that’s hard to beat. The scenery is spectacular, but it’s the combination of rugged coastline, alpine ranges, abundant wildlife, great food and plenty of ways to explore that keeps me coming back.

I’m a Canterbury local who has been lucky enough to have Kaikōura on my doorstep for more than 40 years. My connection with the region started when I was eight, when one of my first school camps took me to Peketa Campground.

Since then, I’ve spent countless days exploring Kaikōura, from climbing Mount Fyffe and walking the Kaikōura Peninsula to spotting whales offshore and swimming with seals. And no trip there is complete without stopping for fresh fish and chips, a classic Kiwi tradition.

Kaikōura is famous for its fresh fish and chips - Coopers Catch

Ove the years, I’ve watched Kaikōura become increasingly well known for its whales, dolphins and seals. But there’s much more to the region than its famous marine life, and plenty of reasons to slow down and explore beyond the main attractions.

So, from a local who has been coming here since childhood, here’s everything you need to know to make the most of your time in Kaikōura.

I’ve been coming to Kaikōura for decades. Getting to share it with my wife on her first trip to NZ made this trip pretty special. 🐬

Have a whale of a time

Perhaps the most famous visitors to Kaikōura aren’t the ones posting most on Instagram, rather they ARE the posts on Instagram!

Thanks to the deep Kaikōura Canyon just offshore, the region is home to resident sperm whales that can be encountered throughout the year. The canyon brings deep water unusually close to shore, creating the conditions that support a remarkable variety of marine life.

Other species can also be spotted depending on the season and conditions, including humpback whales, blue whales and orca, as well as dolphins, fur seals and a huge variety of seabirds.

Whether you head out on a boat or take to the skies, whale watching is one of the best ways to experience Kaikōura’s spectacular coastline.

An outstanding collection of wildlife

The Dolphins

Kaikōura is home to several dolphin species, with dusky dolphins being found here year round. Depending on the season and conditions, you may also spot both common dolphins, and Hector’s dolphins - with these being endemic to New Zealand.

Not all of Kaikōura's famous wildlife can be found under the sea – well not always.

The New Zealand Fur Seal

“Spot the seal” is a favourite game to play as you make your way around the dramatic Kaikōura coast, whether you're exploring on foot, driving the coastal road or heading out on the water.

New Zealand fur seals are often easy to spot around the Kaikōura Peninsula, particularly around Point Kean. They can be playful in the water but surprisingly grumpy on land, so give them plenty of space and enjoy watching them from a distance.

Albatross and seabirds

Kaikōura is also a fantastic place to spot seabirds, including several species of albatross, shearwaters and other ocean-going birds, with the Peninsula Walkway being a popular viewing spot. For the best chance of seeing them up close, take a wildlife cruise and albatross encounter where you’ll often see these impressive birds soaring above the ocean and gliding effortlessly alongside the boat.

Wildlife in the mountains

You’ve played spot the seal, now it’s time to spot the chamois. Just try not to get spotted first!

It’s not just the coast that’s full of wildlife. Head inland into the Kaikōura ranges and you might spot red deer, chamois and wild goats roaming the mountainsides.

Keep an eye out as you explore the walking tracks, riverbeds and rural roads, particularly around dawn and dusk.

Get a taste of Kaikōura

With the Pacific Ocean on one side and the Kaikōura ranges on the other, it’s no surprise that seafood plays a big part in the local food scene.

Kaikōura literally translates to “to eat crayfish”, so sampling some local crayfish is an obvious place to start. You’ll also find plenty of other local seafood, cafés and restaurants around town.

If you fancy a vino, Kaikōura is home to Esses Wine Company which produces some excellent sparkling whites, while you're also only around 45 minutes from the Waipara wine region, making it easy to combine the coast with some of North Canterbury’s excellent wineries.

To help you choose, we’ve rounded up some of our favourite food and drink stops in Kaikōura, so you can discover where to eat, grab a coffee or enjoy a well-earned meal while taking in the mountains, sea and laid-back coastal atmosphere.

The Alpine Pacific Touring Route

Kaikōura is one of the three destinations that make up the Alpine Pacific Touring Route, alongside Christchurch and Hanmer Springs.

This makes Kaikōura an easy destination to visit on its own, but it also works perfectly as part of a wider South Island road trip.

From Christchurch, head north to Kaikōura for mountains, coastline and marine wildlife, then continue inland to Hanmer Springs for hot pools and alpine scenery before looping back towards Christchurch.

Or do the route in reverse. Either way, Kaikōura is a place worth slowing down for rather than simply passing through.

Free Walks and Scenic Spots in the Area

One of the best things about Kaikōura is that there is a range of budget friendly options to keep you busy.

The CamperMate app shows walking tracks and points of interest across the region, from easy coastal walks to more challenging mountain hikes.

Here are some Kaikōura walks and scenic stops worth adding to your itinerary.

Mount Fyffe Track

For spectacular views across Kaikōura and the coast, head into the Kaikōura Range and tackle Mount Fyffe.

The summit track is a challenging hike with a significant climb, so allow plenty of time and check conditions before setting out. If you don't want to tackle the summit, there are shorter walks to take here too, like the forrest walk.

Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway

Walk a section of the coastline or tackle the full 11km trail. Along the way, enjoy sweeping ocean views, look for marine wildlife and discover more about the area's Māori and European history.

The full walk takes around three hours, but shorter sections make it easy to tailor the walk to your time and fitness level.

Parts of the track are exposed, so take care around the cliff edges and keep children close. If you encounter seals, give them plenty of space and never approach them.

Kaikōura Lookout

Take in sweeping views of Kaikōura, the mountains, peninsula and Pacific Ocean from Kaikōura Lookout, an easy-to-access scenic spot perfect for sunrise, sunset or a picnic that you can drive right to!

Ohau Point

This is another easy to access lookout and an excellent place to view and photograph the New Zealand fur seal, along with providing sweeping coastal views.

Kaikōura – a place I keep coming back to

I'm still excited by Kaikōura every time I visit.

The mountains seem to get steeper as I get older, the coastline is still full of wildlife, and there's always another walk, lookout or stretch of coast to explore.

And, of course, there are always more places to find great crayfish and some of the country's best fish and chips.

Some of my earliest memories of Kaikōura are from that school camp at Peketa when I was eight.

More recently, I've had the chance to experience the region all over again with my wife on her first trip to New Zealand, watching whales and dolphins and swimming with seals together.

Soon, I'll get to do it all again with my kids.

It's one of those places I just want to take people to.

Kaikōura always has something new to discover, and I hope this guide helps you make the most of your time there.
