You can't drive to this campsite, but you can pull off the road and park just before and after the entrance to the track to the site and walk 10 minutes, or bike in to this waterfront tentsite. The site has a kitchen shelter and long drop toilet as well as taps warning you to boil water before drinking. The site is right next to a couple of nice walkways, an easy one to Kauri falls or a more challenging walk to an old timber mill & whaling station or the tramline tracks. No traffic here, just the sound of the birds and fish jumping.
This campsite is not boat access only. We got dropped off at the road and watched the 15 minute track to the camping area. It overlooks the Whangaparapara estuary. It is near the hot springs which we didn't check out as it was a much farther walk than we anticipated. There is a sign that says there is glass in one of the hot springs. Water must be boiled here. One long drop toilet. Thousands of mosquitoes. Be prepared for that. If you walk past the wharf, around the rocks, there is a cave and lots of beautiful crystals. It was the highlight for me. The highlight for my sister was the fishing. Stunning spot. But just be prepared, because it is a mission to walk to the closest town. Locals are awesome though, hitchhiking encouraged.
