Locked gates

If seclusion and a view is what your needing this is the spot. Perfect to unwind and just breath!

Per DOC Wellington Visitor Centre, since it must be booked prior to arrival, the NZMCA-DOC vehicle pass does not cover the cost of the campsite.

Agree with previous comments. 2 our of 2 times when passing locked gates. Perhaps contact DOC first - week-days.

We stayed in the Lodge over Queen's birthday weekend (first weekend in June). Lodge was $10 per person - cheaper than camping. Lovely kitchen with fireplace and lounge chairs. Lots of concrete for kids to ride bikes. We went for bushwalks at nearby Totara Reserve and checked out the glow worms there. Bedrooms were cold at night with no heating. Don't forget to ring DoC begore hand to ask for the gate/door codes as there is no cell phone reception at the site. Ask for the code to the firewood shed too because they forgot to give us that one.

Not so easy to find. You need to book in advance to get the codes for the locks at the gate and to the ablutions. The campsite seemed quite abandoned and seemed as if noone came to clean it for quite a while. Showers were hot, but the water was quite stale and at some point there was no water left. (toilet, showers, water tap).

After a long and winding road we found ourselves in front of a locked gate, although the current DOC guide doesn't mention anything about "booking in advance". It's better to give them a call first, since the way to get there is not so fast!

We wanted to use this campsite, but the road that leads here was to annoying. Very far away!
