The camp is closed, tracks as well and view from Rangiaukaha trig overgrown BUT saw a few very curious kiwibirds after dusk and before dawn right on the camp road!

If you're coming through Kawakawa be aware Maps takes you down Waikare Rd. Sign says 7km of gravel but is actually 15km. Very windy and a couple of gnarly wash outs/slips to look out for on the edges- but a beautiful drive through forest though probably not great at night or in bad weather. Getting closer, watch out for fishermen and bus drivers going home. They like to cut corners! Campground was pretty quiet when we were here. Nice n chill.

Good size and well organised with numbered plots so if you book you are sure to have plenty of space. Lots of families just chilling out, poor phone signal, plenty of clean toilets and cold showers, would highly recommend, great value and great loxarion

Very pleasant campsite, $15 per person with the possibility of paying online or at the entrance if you arrive during office hours. Cold shower but rather pleasant because in a wooden cabin. Well-maintained dry toilets. No drinking water, taps available but no possibility of washing dishes. Very pretty spot, silent even if very busy. Good telephone reception. Online reservation recommended!

Lovely beach front sites. Good signal and basic doc facilities. The beach is quite rocky and tidal however but there is a lovely outlook of the bay from the campsite

Probably the most beautiful campsite I have ever stayed at, very quiet, so many gorgeous birds to watch, lovely sea to swim in. 100% would come back.

Die Aussicht ist wirklich sehr schön, aber ansonsten war es etwas enttäuschend. Kein Trinkwasser, nur kalte Duschen, kein Klo mit Spülung sondern nur mit Fallgrube und dieses war nachts auch nicht beleuchtet. Wofür zahlt man die 15€? Da waren wir schon auf besseren kostenlosen Campingplätzen.

A very nice campsite in a beautiful location. We stopped for one night and could easily have stayed longer to relax if we had more time. Campsite was quite full with NZ fa milies making up most of the campers, a good chance to meet some locals. Even with the kids playing it was very chill. Recommend the hike, we saw a lovely sunrise from the trig point. Worthwhile and no freedom sites nearby anyway.

We just spent 4 nights here, we were on site 84, away from everyone else which was great, just needed to use the levellers. Such a stunning spot. Toilets and inside cold showers, not as nice as Otamure Bay. Didn’t see any kiwis but did hear them. We did the Whangaruru North Head Track too which was great! Only downside was the host I’m afraid. We pulled up at 12:00, check-in is from 14:00, but our campsite was completely free of anyone, completely dry, yet she made us wait the 2 hours in the carpark, in the sun, literally staring at our campsite. Now we have ran a Holiday Park and worked at DOC campsites, there are rules of course, but you can also be human! Ya know! Such a difference to other DOC hosts we’ve met.
