There are sandflies, but it’s a very nice campground by the river. The gravel road to get there is in good condition. There are some nice walks around.
Lovely place to stay by the river. Beautiful forest walks near by. Clean long drops and plenty of flat sites (although some look like they might boggy in wet weather). No cooking shelter or sink. There are more sites past the first area, if you drive on to the playground area.
Beautiful campsite next to the river. A little bit chilly but plenty of places to swim. The only downside was the millions of sandflies who wanted to share our van with us. Lovely walk DOC walk which starts at the north toilet block..
Road closure-Piano Flat road Piano Flat Road will be closed for up to five days, from 22 March 2021, so that repairs can be made to two undermined sections of the road just south of the camp ground. We estimate the work will be completed by Friday 26 March. Piano Flat Road is the only access to the camping area. We recommend that you do not make plans to camp at Piano Flat on the week of 22-26 March 2021. For further information, please contact Southland District Council on 0800 732 732.
Fantastic areas to camp, and so many options. Be careful if you only have a two wheel drive vehicle and are venturing onto wet grass. For places are provided. Toilets. Lovely river, stove bush all around. Paid per night. Hunters often stay here too so don't freak out when you see their guns. Check out the nearby Wakaia too, especially the museum. Nice toilet there and a well stocked 4 Square.
Awesome place to stay! Lots of sandflies! Be prepared! The jack edgerton track is great! Don’t forget your hiking shoes!!! :)
Great spot - has three large grassed parking areas! Toilet needed a clean, and people kept leaving seat up = Sandflies eat your butt. Only downer was a member who verbally abused us about our young dog, who short barked twice at them, as they walked up so close to our van. The lady was flicking a towel at our dog and yelling at me to keep it under control, but our dog hadn’t even moved from his spot... She was the one aggravating him with the towel! Everyone else and their dogs were great.
What an amazing location..... Quiet in winter with a few visitors/trampers/hunters. The best DOC toilet we have used!!!!!! It smelt nice..... No obvious faecal matter & I didn't have to pre-clean to use!!
Great spot to park up and as mentioned below, very well looked after. Bloody sandflys love it here as well so won't stay as long as I'd planned.
Really gorgeous in all aspects. Idyllic grassy camping spots. Insane amount of biting gnats when we went at the end of September.
