As a female solo traveller I’m usually very cautious camping alone. This place in particular made me feel very uneasy. There was only me and one other man in a white van parked up. He asked if I had phone service then proceeded to say there was none, almost like he was checking. He offered me to come over to his van for drinks and asked if I was alone. I left shortly after and he watched me drive away. If your like me I really do not recommend you stay here alone especially as it’s so far.

1h hard gravel road. Be careful, it's tidy and dangerous when you meet other cars. Drive slow. Don't go if raining hard and if you don't have a good car. Otherwise there is no problem (old campervan on a small rain is okay). Worth it, really good "hippy vibes" campground, on the beach. Small (15 cars and its crowded, no more space) and 1 drop toilet but okay (no smell, no bugs). Beach, waves, stars, amazing sunset and firewoods. You'll make memories from it ;)

Very nice place! The path is quite bumpy but doable. It's worth it. Highly recommended. The sunset and the tide are beautiful to watch. Toilet is OK.

Very nice parking spot right by the sea, but you have to drive 40km on a gravel road and the path marked on Google Maps, which should lead further, leads through a river. It is a long way away from any network and there are a lot of small biting flies

Incredible. No cell coverage. Being all your essentials as it’s a long way back to civilisation. Beautiful sunsets! The first freedoms camping area can be a bit tight, more privacy down at the river mouth. Well worth the trip.

This is an incredible place. The road in can be a bit hairy, just be cautious of speeding drivers coming the other way on corners. We freedom camped there just after new year, the upper section for freedom camping was busier and down on the flatter ground at the river mouth, big vechiles or anything towing a caravan or large bus, I wouldn’t risk trying to get in there, especially if the place is busy and you want to try get out again. There is no cell coverage, so be sure to be cautious of this.

The best free camping I've done in the South Island: the view is magnificent, the place is peaceful. The only thing to be aware of is that the road is quite difficult: 50 kms on an unmade road, lots of stones, holes in the road, etc. I took this 'risk' with my Nissan Presage and it was totally worth it. Stunning drive and epic spot, sandflies aplenty but where isn't there?! Long drop down the track but its seriously flaky and I wouldn't suggest driving, enough space for 4 or 5 at a push vehicles at the top before the road.

Drove there just for a look, the grass is extremely high for the top level and the bottom level’s track appears quite eroded. Two points where this appears washed out, high wind on the flat areas too.

Absolutely incredible spot, the views alone are worth the drive. And the mind blowing stars at night. There are 2 spots. The top spot is totally fine and super easy to get to.. If you follow the road down to the second spot the road becomes a little gnarly - I suggest walking it before attempting to drive. The long drop is down there and its right on the beach. We stayed 3 days and could have stayed another 10 if we didn't need water. :)
