Road is still closed.
Road is still closed, in case anyone was wondering
The road is closed due to a massive slip. It's still active so no work is being done and there's no time-frame for re-opening.
The road is currently closed so access by foot only :(
Spent some time here before the road was shut down, not sure of the current access status. If its is open this place is absolutely amazing. Many places to hide out and camp, lots of beautiful nature, lots of raging rivers, misty mountains, tramping huts and amazing walks. If you lucky you might run into the amazing DoC staff who work there! Super helpful and very caring for both visitors and the park. Expect no reception at all out there, consider GPS safety stuff if your going on a big tramp, the weather is its own special ball of chaos out there.
Whilst a narrow gravel road with some tight corners, had no problems getting a 7m 2800kg caravan in here. Great spot, heaps of space. Wonderful swimming home at Blackgate Flat where you can camp closest to the river.
So Doc aren't the best for signage, so it seems. A visit to the forks was somewhat of a let down with the "main camping site"(school house flats) closed till October but there was no signage to notify that until you arrived at a barrier closing the the road. The next best place doesn't offer much in the way of flat hard ground for parking and little on offer in the way of a quick bush walk! A little disappointed.
The area at the very end of the road (School House Flat) has lots of spots to park up and is really pleasant. More tents than RVs each time we've been. Road is narrow but quite OK for a 6.7m motor home. No cellular signal.
Very nice campground between the mountains. You can camp at 3 spots here. The carpark(fist stop) not so charming. We wanted to stay at the second stop Blackgate Flat, beautiful view, non flushible but clean toilet, but there was a wasp nest (just over the wooden fence!!). Went a little further to the third stop, Schoolhouse flat. Here is a lot of space and a nice view! This campground does have flushible toilet.
Really nice open campground with clean toilets good bins. Nice stream and a few good walks
