Carpark area plus long-drop toilet. Stunning views across farmland, which is crossed in order to reach the location. Some farm gates to open and close, and track quite challenging but manageable. Several walks lead off from parking area. The Swamp Loop was an easy one for early evening. This night was highlight of our week away.
I think this site should be renamed in the NZMCA book and website as "Ruahine Forest Park - Sunrise Carpark". This is the name on the DOC shelter at the site. The Triple X hut is about 10 minutes walk from the car park and is probably of little interest to NZMCA members. There is no camping ground here. Just a car park for intending trampers and a toilet block with a pit toilet. We couldn't see any water tap. That said, this is a lovely spot with sweeping views and well positioned for the morning sun in the foothills of the Ruahines. We spent a very quiet night here with our 7 m motor home in the car park. I think anything longer might block the access unless the car spaces are mostly vacant. The last 3km of the access road are a single lane farm track. Opportunities to pass an oncoming vehicle are very limited. The track is well gravelled and should be OK in all weather conditions but there are numerous potholes.
